In a sentence dictation exercise, a sentence containing the target spelling word is read aloud, and the child writes the word (or the whole sentence). Teachers have used it for generations because it works: the sentence gives the word meaning, context and grammar — a much stronger memory hook than copying letters from a list. Many classrooms check dictation work with the COPS method (Capitalization, Overall appearance, Punctuation, Spelling).
The hard part was always the same: one person has to read every sentence aloud, slowly, over and over. SpellGenie does the reading — clearly, at dictation pace, as many times as the child needs — and grades the answers instantly. It also generates a printable worksheet with the sentences and blank lines, for pencil-and-paper practice.
Frequently asked questions
What is sentence dictation?
Sentence dictation is a classic classroom exercise: the teacher reads a full sentence aloud, and students write it down (or write the target spelling word). Hearing a word inside a meaningful sentence gives children context and makes the spelling stick better than isolated word lists. SpellGenie reads each sentence, pauses, then says the target word on its own — exactly like a real teacher giving a dictation test.
Can I make a sentence dictation test from my own word list?
Yes. Paste your words into the free tool on the home page, pick 'Word in a sentence' as the test style, and start. Every word is automatically placed into an example sentence and read aloud. You can also print a worksheet version where each sentence appears with a blank line for the missing word.
Which grades do the dictation sentences work for?
The example sentences are written for elementary students (grades 1–8). Ready-made sentence dictation tests for grades 1–5 are available above — each one launches in one tap with audio included.
Is this sentence dictation tool free?
Yes, completely free while SpellGenie is in beta — no account, no app install, works on any device with sound.
